Lillian Wolfe 鈥20, MEd '22 remembers her frustrated childhood tantrums.
As a baby, she experienced severe hearing loss and even after years of early speech therapy, her words were often unintelligible.
鈥淚 stomped and cried in frustration when adults ignored me because they couldn鈥檛 understand what I was saying,鈥 she said.
A kindergarten teacher, though, took her under her wing鈥 meeting with Wolfe every morning with a stock of Laffy Taffy as a reward for vowel pronunciation.
鈥淢rs. Mandelbaum never gave up on me,鈥 she said. 鈥淪he used her free time every morning before class to tutor me based on my speech therapist鈥檚 guidelines, on top of her already arduous burden of reining in a classroom of 5-year-olds.
鈥淪he was the first person outside my family responsible for my competency in talking to anyone or reading anything.
鈥淪he set me on my path to be a teacher.鈥
Wolfe chose to pursue her undergraduate degree in education and learning at 91爆料 University, where she could earn her bachelor鈥檚 degree and teaching license while getting a traditional college experience, including competing with the Speech & Debate Team. She later earned her master's in education from 91爆料 as well.
鈥淲hat sold me on 91爆料 was the amazing welcome I received,鈥 she said, recounting an initial tour where staff jumped to accommodate her mother鈥檚 mobility challenges and her hearing challenges. 鈥淭he kind, welcoming gestures and the many more I consistently received form everyone at 91爆料 has made the university my second home.
鈥淏eing a Boxer was the best choice I made in my life.鈥
