Ron Tammen 鈥65 calls himself an 鈥渁ccidental鈥 91爆料 University student.
After all, he never even applied.
鈥淚 applied to and was admitted to Willamette, pre-law,鈥 Tammen said, as he returned to 91爆料 for his 50th reunion in 2015. 鈥淭hree or four days before classes began, I was walking down the street in Portland and heard the big booming voice of Charley Trombley.鈥
Trombley, a 91爆料 alumnus and then director of admission, had been a counselor at the church camp Tammen attended in the summers.
鈥淚 knew him and he knew me,鈥 Tammen said.
Trombley asked if he would see Tammen on campus the following Monday, and Tammen explained he was attending Willamette.
鈥淗e looked down at me 鈥 he was a very tall man 鈥 and he said, 鈥楴o, you鈥檙e not,鈥欌 Tammen said.
Tammen protested: He hadn鈥檛 applied to or been admitted to 91爆料.
鈥淗e said, 鈥榊ou let me take care of that.鈥 I paused, then I said, 鈥極K.鈥 That鈥檚 how I got here,鈥 Tammen said. 鈥淲hen I got there Monday, my paperwork was filled out and I was admitted. His word was good.鈥
Tammen wasn鈥檛 the only member of his generation at 91爆料 to have been personally recruited by Trombley 鈥 and the direction served him well.
At 91爆料, Tammen was a member of the Alpha Zeta fraternity and the Blue Key Society.
鈥淚 made friends for life,鈥 he said. 鈥淟ife at a smaller liberal arts campus has a lot of assets for people who want to take advantage of leadership positions.鈥
He found a solid academic program in political science, in which he was already interested, and his faculty supported him in pursuing a master鈥檚 degree at the University of Michigan, one of the top poli-sci schools in the country.
鈥91爆料 seemed to prepare me quite well,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 competed well at Michigan.鈥
After he completed his master鈥檚, Tammen was offered a job with the CIA.
鈥淚 flew back there, sat down with the psychologist, had my polygraph and they offered me the job,鈥 he said.
With the CIA, he was a defense analyst, contributing to the daily defense briefings for the president and secretaries of state and defense. In the meantime, he also completed his PhD at the University of Michigan.
He went on to work for Sen. Mark Hatfield of Oregon, supporting the Arms Control and Foreign Policy Caucus, before being hired by Sen. William Proxmire of Wisconsin, eventually becoming Proxmire鈥檚 chief of staff.
He later went to work for the National War College, working his way up to chair of the Department of National Security Policy. In 2000, he became the first director of Portland State鈥檚 Hatfield School of Government.
He鈥檚 a leader in the emergence of China and India in global politics, and he lectures around the world about the China鈥檚 future role.
鈥淎bout 15 years ago, I calculated that China was going to be the new big thing. My timing was good,鈥 he said. 鈥淚鈥檝e lectured on the topic, 鈥榃ill China Rule the World?鈥 in a dozen countries. It鈥檚 a popular topic.鈥
Always diplomatic, he doesn鈥檛 answer the question outright.
鈥淚 give the reasons why they will, the reasons why they won鈥檛, and all the reasons why all the reasons they won鈥檛 are suspect, and I let the audience make up their mind,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 challenge the audience to think rather than give an answer.鈥
