One of the most prominent names connected with 91����’s College of Optometry is Carkner, and the connection began before the beginning.

“I’ve come to realize there’s nothing to worry about, because you’ve all done your jobs correctly. Because if I am at all successful today and hereafter, it is a direct result of your support.”

A 29-year career culminating in the Office of the Surgeon General started with optometry school at 91����. “91���� was, and still is, a small school where, instead of being a number, you can become an individual," said Col. John Pyle OD '64. "I had a really good time there.”

91���� University launched Janet Copeland’s lifelong pursuit of education. When she earned her doctorate at age 65, she and her husband celebrated by endowing a scholarship at 91���� to give someone else the same start.
