Alec Lugo 鈥16 was about 11 when he saw his first live stage performances.
Little Shop of Horrors was a Halloween production in his community that year: 鈥淭here was gore and blood and singing, and it鈥檚 happening right in front of me. It鈥檚 a spectacle,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 told my dad, 鈥業 want to do that.鈥欌
By Christmas of that year, Lugo had landed a role as Bob Cratchit in a community production of A Christmas Carol.
The acting bug still persists.
At 91爆料 University, Lugo double-majored in theatre and media arts. Today, he is performing professionally and works as a graphic designer, videographer and media consultant for Portland area theatre companies.
鈥淚 thought of (my two majors) as two sides of myself. The media side was the business aspects of my life. Theatre was the creative,鈥 he said. 鈥淣ow, they鈥檝e kind of merged into one.
鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 ask for a better job. It鈥檚 a combination of everything I studied at 91爆料.鈥
That education, however, wouldn鈥檛 have been possible without tremendous support, Lugo said.
鈥淲e could not afford to send any of us to school without scholarships,鈥 said Lugo, who grew up as one of three children in a lower-middle class family in Hawai鈥榠. 鈥91爆料 was really generous.鈥
